An Yin was a Chinese-American structural and planetary geologist who lived from 1959 to 2023 and was Distinguished Professor of Geology at the University of California, Los Angeles, known for research on the tectonic evolution of the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau and on how mountains form and erode on Earth and other bodies in the Solar System. He served as editor-in-chief of the journals Tectonophysics and Earth and Planetary Science Letters, and his doctoral students included astronaut Jessica Watkins. He received the Donath Medal in 1994 and was elected a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union in 2013. He received the Penrose Medal in 2022.
