Andre Hubert Dumont

Andre Hubert Dumont was a Belgian geologist, mineralogist and academic administrator born February 15, 1809, in Liege, then part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, who died February 28, 1857, in Liege, and who published a notable study of Liege geology in 1832 before becoming professor of mineralogy and geology at the University of Liege and later serving as its rector. He spent twenty years producing a geological map of Belgium, completed in 1849, and conducted field research across Europe including the Bosphorus region and the Spanish mountains, going on to produce an influential geological map of Europe considered one of the first serious attempts at regional scale geological correlation. His other works include a memoir on the Ardennes, Rhenish, Brabant and Condroz terrains published in 1847 and 1848. He received the Wollaston Medal from the Geological Society of London in 1840.
