Anil Kumar Bhattacharyya was an Indian statistician at the Indian Statistical Institute who developed the Bhattacharyya coefficient and the associated Bhattacharyya distance, a measure of the similarity between two probability distributions that has since become a standard tool applied across statistics, genetics, signal processing and computer science.
