Arthur Elijah Trueman

Sir Arthur Elijah Trueman was a British geologist born April 26, 1894, in Nottingham, England, who died January 5, 1956, and who held professorships at University College Cardiff from 1917 to 1920, University College Swansea from 1920 to 1933, the University of Bristol from 1933 to 1937, and the University of Glasgow from 1937 to 1946, later serving on the University Grants Committee from 1946 to 1953 and chairing it from 1949. He made significant contributions to palaeontology and stratigraphy and published influential works including An Introduction to Geology in 1938 and The Scenery of England and Wales the same year. He received the Bigsby Medal in 1939, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1942, was knighted in 1951, and received the Wollaston Medal in 1955, along with four honorary doctorates from the universities of Glasgow, Rhodes, Wales and Leeds.
