Barbara A. Romanowicz is a French geophysicist and seismologist born April 5, 1950, in Suresnes, France, who holds a chair at the College de France in Paris and directed the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory from 1990 to 2011. She developed GEOSCOPE, a global seismic station network established between 1982 and 1990, created real time earthquake notification systems for northern California, founded the Cooperative Institute for Dynamic Earth Research, and advanced seismological theory and numerical modeling methods used to image the interior of Earth. She was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2005, received the Gutenberg Medal in 2003, the Inge Lehmann Medal in 2009, the William Bowie Medal in 2019, and the Wollaston Medal in 2020.
