Hermann Max Bruno Sander, known as Bruno Sander, was an Austrian geologist and mineralogist born February 23, 1884, in Innsbruck, Austria, who died September 5, 1979, in Innsbruck, and who, along with Walter Schmidt, is known for founding petrofabric analysis, also called structural petrology; his 1911 paper Uber Zusammenhange zwischen Teilbewegung und Gefuge in Gesteinen was called a milestone in petrology, and he later published Gefugekunde der Gesteine in 1930 and the two-part Einfuhrung in die Gefugekunde geologischer Korper between 1948 and 1950. He served as professor of mineralogy and petrography at the University of Innsbruck from 1922 to 1955. He won the Gustav Steinmann Medal in 1950, the Abraham Gottlob Werner Medal in 1964, was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1966, held honorary doctorates from universities in Gottingen and Vienna, and received the Penrose Medal in 1957.
