Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman was an Indian physicist known for his investigations into the scattering of light. He discovered what became known as the Raman effect, a form of light scattering in which deflected light changes wavelength when passing through a transparent material, and he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for this work, becoming the first Asian recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics.
