Charles William Bachman III was an American computer scientist who built his career in industrial research and development rather than academia, working at Dow Chemical and then General Electric, where around 1963 he developed the Integrated Data Store, one of the first database management systems and an early implementation of the navigational database model. Bachman created what became known as Bachman diagrams, a graphical technique for representing data structures and system architecture that became a standard tool in database design. He later founded his own company, Bachman Information Systems, in 1983 to commercialize data modeling and reengineering tools. Bachman received the ACM Turing Award in 1973 for his outstanding contributions to database technology, and he later received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation in 2012 for fundamental inventions in database management, transaction processing and software engineering.
