Cheikh Anta Diop

Cheikh Anta Diop (1923-1986) was a Senegalese scientist and historian trained in physics and chemistry in Paris, who built one of the first radiocarbon dating laboratories in Africa at the Institut Fondamental d'Afrique Noire in Dakar. Applying melanin dosage testing and other scientific methods to Egyptian mummified remains, he argued that ancient Egyptian civilization was populated predominantly by Black Africans, a thesis that challenged prevailing Western Egyptological consensus of his time and remains debated and contested among specialists to this day. His broader body of work argued for methodological rigor in reconstructing African history using the same scientific techniques applied elsewhere, and he became an influential, if controversial, figure in the development of Afrocentric historiography. He later founded and directed the radiocarbon laboratory that bears his name at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar.
