Daniel Quillen (1940 to 2011) was an American mathematician known as the prime architect of higher algebraic K-theory, work for which he won the Cole Prize in 1975 and the Fields Medal in 1978. He introduced the Quillen Q-construction, proved the Quillen-Suslin theorem, and made foundational contributions to rational homotopy theory and the theory of model categories.
