Edouard de Verneuil

Philippe Edouard Poulletier de Verneuil, known as Edouard de Verneuil, was a French paleontologist born February 13, 1805, in Paris, who died May 29, 1873, in Paris, and who trained initially in law before turning to geology after attending lectures by Jean-Baptiste Elie de Beaumont, going on to conduct geological expeditions across Crimea, the Rhenish provinces, Belgium, Russia, the United States and Spain, often alongside geologists including Adam Sedgwick and Roderick Murchison. He published a memoir on Crimean geology in 1837, contributed to The Geology of Russia in Europe and the Ural Mountains in 1845, published Paleozoic rock studies in the Bulletin of the Geological Society of France in 1847, and produced a geological map of Spain and Portugal with Edouard Collomb in 1864. He served three terms as president of the Geological Society of France, in 1840, 1853 and 1867, was elected a foreign member of the Royal Society in 1860, and received the Wollaston Medal in 1853 jointly with Adolphe d Archiac; the brachiopod fossil Cyrtospirifer verneuili is named in his honor.
