American physicist who in December 1945 at Harvard University, working independently of Felix Bloch, first detected nuclear magnetic resonance absorption in solid paraffin. He shared the 1952 Nobel Prize in Physics with Bloch, and their parallel discoveries founded NMR spectroscopy as an analytical technique.
