Edward Victor Appleton

Edward Victor Appleton was a British physicist who studied the ionosphere, the electrically charged layer of Earth's upper atmosphere that reflects radio waves. His investigations identified a distinct layer, later called the Appleton layer, and his findings had practical importance for shortwave radio and radar. He received the 1947 Nobel Prize in Physics for his investigations of the physics of the upper atmosphere, especially for the discovery of the Appleton layer.
