American physicist who independently proposed the phase stability principle behind the synchrotron in 1945, unaware that Soviet physicist Vladimir Veksler had published the same idea the year before. McMillan acknowledged Veksler's priority once he learned of it, and the two later became friends and shared the 1963 Atoms for Peace Award. McMillan also shared the 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Glenn Seaborg for discovering neptunium, unrelated to his synchrotron work.
