Robert W. Parry (1917-2006) was an American chemistry professor who spent his career at the University of Michigan and the University of Utah. He served as president of the American Chemical Society in 1982 and received the Priestley Medal in 1993, one of the highest honors the American chemical community confers. General reference sources read thin on the specifics of his own research program; this is named as a gap for the depth wave rather than guessed at here.
