Ernest Lawrence was an American physicist who invented the cyclotron, the first circular particle accelerator, developing it at the University of California, Berkeley beginning in 1930. The cyclotron accelerates charged particles along an outward spiral path using a fixed magnetic field and an alternating electric field, and Lawrence's design became the model for later generations of particle accelerators. He was awarded the 1939 Nobel Prize in Physics for the invention and development of the cyclotron and for results obtained with it.
