Friedrich Johann Karl Becke was an Austrian mineralogist and petrologist born December 31, 1855, in Prague, Austria-Hungary, who died June 18, 1931, in Vienna, Austria, and who specialized in identifying rock-forming minerals through their light-refractive properties, publishing this research through the Vienna Academy in 1893; he is remembered chiefly for the Becke line test, a technique still used to compare the refractive indices of a mineral and its surrounding medium. He served as a lecturer in geology at the University of Vienna, as professor at the University of Czernowitz from 1882, as professor in Prague eight years later, and as professor of mineralogy at Vienna, succeeding Gustav Tschermak von Seysenegg, and edited the journal Mineralogische und Petrographische Mittheilungen. He received the Wollaston Medal in 1929.
