German physicist who, with Heinrich Rohrer at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory, invented the scanning tunneling microscope in 1981, the first instrument to image individual atoms on a surface directly. He was awarded half of the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physics for the invention, the other half going to Ernst Ruska for the electron microscope.
