Giuseppe Occhialini

Physics

Giuseppe Occhialini was an Italian physicist who lived from 1907 to 1993, known for helping identify the positron in cosmic rays at Cambridge own Cavendish Laboratory in 1932 using cloud chamber technology. After relocating to Brazil own University of Sao Paulo from 1937 to 1944 due to fascism in Italy, he returned to England and, at the University of Bristol, contributed to the 1947 discovery of pion decay alongside Cesar Lattes and Cecil Powell using photographic emulsion techniques. He later held positions at the University of Genoa and the University of Milan from 1952, and was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society in 1974. He received the Wolf Prize in Physics in 1979, shared with George Uhlenbeck.
