German experimental physicist (1882 to 1945) who developed the original particle-counting apparatus in 1908 under Ernest Rutherford at the University of Manchester, then partnered with his doctoral student Walther Muller in 1928 to build the sealed, portable Geiger-Muller tube, which could detect alpha, beta and gamma radiation where the earlier device detected only alpha particles.
