Heike Kamerlingh Onnes was a Dutch experimental physicist who became the first person to liquefy helium, cooling it to near 1.5 kelvin, and who in 1911 discovered superconductivity when he observed that the electrical resistance of mercury vanished at extremely low temperatures. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1913 for his investigations into the properties of matter at low temperatures.
