Hermann von Helmholtz was a German physicist and physician whose work applying rigorous physical measurement to the nervous system, vision and hearing is widely credited with founding biophysics as a distinct approach to living systems. In 1849, while at Konigsberg, he measured the speed at which a signal travels along a nerve fibre, the first direct measurement of nerve conduction velocity. He also invented the ophthalmoscope in 1851, formulated an early general statement of the conservation of energy in 1847, and published influential studies of physiological optics and acoustics.

In 1847, drawing on the earlier work of Joule, Sadi Carnot, and Emile Clapeyron, Hermann von Helmholtz arrived at conclusions similar to Grove's and published his theories in his book Uber die Erhaltung der Kraft (On the Conservation of Force, 1847).
