Indira Nath (1938-2021) was an Indian immunologist born in New Delhi who earned her medical degree from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences before studying in the United Kingdom and returning to India to build immunology research programs. Her work focused on immune unresponsiveness, nerve damage and reactions in leprosy, and she developed markers for assessing leprosy bacillus viability, publishing more than 120 scientific papers. She founded the Department of Biotechnology at AIIMS in 1986 and received India's Padma Shri in 1999, the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in 1983, and the L'Oreal-UNESCO Award for Women in Science in 2002.
