Ivan Sutherland

Computer Science

Ivan Sutherland is an American computer scientist widely regarded as a pioneer of computer graphics. His 1963 doctoral thesis, Sketchpad, described an early graphical man-machine communication system and a forerunner of the modern graphical user interface. He later taught computer graphics at the University of Utah with David Evans, training a generation of researchers who helped found the field. He received the 1988 ACM Turing Award.
