James Lighthill

Sir Michael James Lighthill was a British applied mathematician known for his pioneering work in aeroacoustics, the study of how fluid flow generates sound, which underlies efforts to reduce aircraft engine noise. He also wrote the influential 1973 Lighthill report on artificial intelligence research, whose pessimistic assessment that the field had not delivered the major breakthroughs once promised contributed to a period of reduced funding and interest that became known as an AI winter.
