Jeffrey Goldstone

Physics

Jeffrey Goldstone (born 3 September 1933) is a British theoretical physicist and emeritus physics faculty member at the MIT Center for Theoretical Physics, noted for the discovery of the Nambu-Goldstone boson. He was born in Manchester, educated at Manchester Grammar School and Trinity College, Cambridge (BA 1954, PhD 1958), and worked on the theory of nuclear matter under Hans Bethe, developing the modified Feynman diagrams now called Goldstone diagrams. In 1957 he proved the linked-cluster theorem, showing that only connected diagrams contribute to the calculation. With Abdus Salam and Steven Weinberg he proved that zero-mass particles must exist in theories with spontaneously broken symmetries. He was a faculty member at Cambridge from 1962 to 1976, moved to the United States in 1977, and is working on quantum computation.
