Johann Salomo Christoph Schweigger (1779-1857) was a German chemist and physicist. In 1820, shortly after Hans Christian Orsted's discovery that an electric current deflects a compass needle, Schweigger built the earliest galvanometer at the University of Halle, winding the current-carrying wire in coils around the needle to amplify the deflection.
