Johannes Diderik van der Waals was a Dutch theoretical physicist who received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1910 for his work on the equation of state for gases and liquids. He is best known for the van der Waals equation, which describes how gases behave and transition to liquid form by accounting for the size of molecules and the attractive forces between them.
