John Nash

John Nash was an American mathematician whose 1950 doctoral thesis introduced the concept now called Nash equilibrium, a solution concept for non-cooperative games describing a stable outcome in which no participant can improve their own result by changing their strategy alone while every other participant's strategy stays fixed. This idea, developed within game theory, became a foundational tool used far beyond mathematics, particularly across economics, where it is used to analyze competition, bargaining and strategic decision making, and Nash shared the 1994 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for this work. Nash also made significant contributions to pure mathematics outside game theory, including the Nash embedding theorem, which shows that abstract curved spaces studied in differential geometry can always be embedded within a higher-dimensional flat Euclidean space, and he did influential work on partial differential equations. Nash's life, including a period of severe mental illness followed by a notable recovery later in his career, became widely known to the public through the biography and film A Beautiful Mind.
