Katsuko Saruhashi developed, in 1955, a set of tables still known as Saruhashi's Table for calculating dissolved carbon dioxide in seawater from its temperature, pH, and salinity, a tool oceanographers still use. Working with Yasuo Miyake she measured radioactive fallout, caesium-137 and strontium-90, in Pacific seawater after nuclear weapons testing and found levels far higher in the western Pacific than the Atlantic, evidence that helped support the case for a ban on above ground nuclear tests.
