Kenichi Fukui was a Japanese chemist who became the first person of East Asian ancestry to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, sharing the 1981 prize with Roald Hoffmann for his independent investigations into the mechanisms of chemical reactions. He is known for developing frontier orbital theory, including the concept of the Fukui function.
