Kenneth Eugene Iverson was a Canadian-born computer scientist and mathematician who created APL, A Programming Language, a notation he developed for describing and analyzing topics in data processing while working at Harvard University and later at IBM Research from 1960 to 1980, where he was named an IBM Fellow in 1970. Iverson earned a PhD in applied mathematics from Harvard in 1954 under Howard Aiken, and APL grew out of a mathematical notation he had used for teaching before it was implemented as a working programming language known for its compact, symbol-based expression of array operations. After leaving IBM, Iverson worked at the APL time-sharing firm I. P. Sharp Associates before founding Jsoftware Inc. in 1990 to develop J, a successor language designed to keep APL mathematical power in a more widely portable, ASCII-based form. He received the ACM Turing Award in 1979 for his pioneering work in programming languages and mathematical notation and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering that same year.
