Nikola Tesla was a Serbian-American engineer and physicist, born in the Austrian Empire in what is now Croatia, best known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current electricity supply system. In 1887 Tesla developed an induction motor that ran on alternating current using a rotating magnetic field produced by polyphase currents, a design that needed no commutator and so avoided the sparking and maintenance problems of earlier direct current motors; his polyphase AC patents were licensed by Westinghouse Electric in 1888 and the resulting system was publicly demonstrated at the 1893 World Columbian Exposition in Chicago as the Tesla Polyphase System. Through the 1890s and 1900s Tesla pursued ambitious experiments in wireless power transmission and long distance wireless communication, most notably the unfinished Wardenclyffe Tower project, intended to demonstrate transmission of signals and power across the Atlantic without wires. The SI unit of magnetic flux density, the tesla, was named in his honor in 1960 in recognition of his lasting contribution to the science of electricity and magnetism.
