Nikolai Bogolyubov

Physics

Nikolai Bogolyubov was a Soviet theoretical physicist and mathematician who made foundational contributions to quantum field theory and to the statistical mechanics of superfluidity and superconductivity. In the late 1940s and 1950s Bogolyubov developed a microscopic theory of superfluidity, the frictionless flow found in extremely cold liquid helium, and introduced the mathematical method now called the Bogoliubov transformation, independently developed at the same time by physicist John George Valatin, which became central to explaining superconductivity within the later BCS theory by reformulating the behavior of interacting particles in terms of new, more convenient quasi-particle states. He also developed the BBGKY hierarchy, a systematic method for deriving the equations that describe how large systems of many interacting particles evolve statistically over time, work that remains foundational to non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. In quantum field theory Bogolyubov contributed to renormalization theory, the mathematical technique physicists use to remove troublesome infinite quantities from their calculations of particle interactions, proving results now known as the Bogoliubov-Parasyuk theorem. He led an influential school of theoretical physics at the Steklov Institute and later directed the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, training a large number of Soviet physicists across several generations.
