Oliver Heaviside (1850-1925) was a British mathematician and physicist who made major contributions to electrical engineering and mathematical physics. He invented an operational technique for solving differential equations equivalent to the Laplace transform, independently developed vector calculus, and rewrote Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism into the compact form still used today. His work transformed the mathematical treatment of telecommunications and electromagnetism, though he worked largely outside the scientific establishment of his time.
