Otto Loewi

Medicine

Otto Loewi was a German-born pharmacologist and psychobiologist, born in Frankfurt in 1873, who later held Austrian citizenship from 1905 and American citizenship from 1946. He is renowned for discovering the role of acetylcholine as a chemical neurotransmitter, demonstrated in a famous 1921 experiment in which he transferred fluid from a stimulated frog heart to a second frog heart and showed that a chemical substance, rather than an electrical signal, had carried the nerve impulse effect between them. He shared the 1936 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Henry Dale for this work on the chemical transmission of nerve impulses.
