Otto Stern was a German-American experimental physicist. With Walther Gerlach he demonstrated the quantization of atomic spin in the Stern-Gerlach experiment, and he developed the molecular beam method used to study the properties of atoms and molecules. He received the 1943 Nobel Prize in Physics for his contribution to the development of the molecular ray method and his discovery of the magnetic moment of the proton. Stern was nominated for the Nobel Prize eighty-two times between 1925 and 1945, the second-highest total of any nominee in that period, before finally winning it.
