Philip Showalter Hench was an American physician and rheumatologist, born in Pittsburgh in 1896, known for discovering the therapeutic use of cortisone in treating rheumatoid arthritis. Working with biochemist Edward Calvin Kendall and chemist Tadeusz Reichstein, he helped uncover the hormones of the adrenal cortex, their structure, and their biological effects. The three researchers shared the 1950 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for these discoveries.
