Philippe Nozieres

Philippe Nozieres was a French physicist who lived from 1932 to 2022, known for major advances in understanding the many-body problem, particularly the behavior of electrons in metals, and for establishing foundational concepts in quasiparticles and Fermi liquid theory. He worked at the Ecole Normale Superieure, Princeton University and the University of Paris before spending most of his career from 1972 onward at the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, also holding professorships at the University of Grenoble and the College de France. He received the CNRS Gold Medal in 1988 and was elected to both the French Academy of Sciences and the United States National Academy of Sciences. He received the Wolf Prize in Physics in 1984, shared with Conyers Herring.
