Pieter Zeeman was a Dutch experimental physicist who shared the 1902 Nobel Prize in Physics with Hendrik Lorentz for their discovery and theoretical explanation of the Zeeman effect. In 1896 Zeeman found that strong magnetic fields split spectral lines into multiple components, a discovery that confirmed theoretical predictions about electromagnetic radiation and showed that the particles emitting light were negatively charged and far lighter than hydrogen atoms.
