Rainer Weiss is a German born American physicist who in the early 1970s worked out the design for using laser interferometry to detect gravitational waves and became a founding architect of the LIGO project. He shared the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics for decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves.
