Julius Wilhelm Richard Dedekind was a German mathematician who lived from 1831 to 1916 and made foundational contributions to number theory, abstract algebra and the axiomatic foundations of arithmetic. He is best known for the Dedekind cut, a rigorous construction of the real numbers from partitions of the rational numbers, and he also contributed to the early development of set theory and logicism. His work on ideals became fundamental to the later development of ring theory in abstract algebra.
