Somdatta Sinha

Somdatta Sinha, born in 1951, is an Indian biology researcher recognized as one of the country's earliest pioneers in theoretical biology, working across mathematical and computational biology, nonlinear dynamics and complex systems to study biological patterns from genetic sequences to disease spread. She earned undergraduate and master degrees in physics from Visva-Bharati University and a doctorate in theoretical biology from Jawaharlal Nehru University in 1982, then worked as a scientist at the Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology in Hyderabad from 1983 to 2011 before holding professorships at IISER Mohali and, currently, an honorary senior scientist position at IISER Kolkata. She received India's National Senior Woman Bioscientist Award in 2013 and a J.C. Bose National Fellowship from the Department of Science and Technology.
