Stefan Banach

Mathematics

Stefan Banach was a Polish mathematician regarded as one of the founders of modern functional analysis, the branch of mathematics that studies vector spaces of functions and the operators that act on them. Banach introduced and systematically developed the concept of what is now called a Banach space, a vector space equipped with a notion of length, or norm, that is also complete, meaning that sequences of elements that get progressively closer together always converge to a limit that is itself within the space, a structure that turned out to underlie an enormous range of mathematical analysis. He proved a number of foundational theorems bearing his name, including the Banach fixed-point theorem, which guarantees that certain kinds of mathematical mappings have exactly one point left unchanged by the mapping and gives a method for finding it, a result with wide application well beyond pure mathematics. Banach was a leading figure of the Lwow School of Mathematics in interwar Poland, an informal but highly productive group of mathematicians who conducted much of their collaborative work in a cafe, the Scottish Cafe, recording open problems and results in a notebook that became known as the Scottish Book.
