Subir Kumar Ghosh

Subir Kumar Ghosh (1932-2008) was an Indian structural geologist and emeritus professor at Jadavpur University in Kolkata. His research examined the geometry of folded rock structures, including the relationship between the axial surfaces of folds and the principal planes of deformation, and he contributed influential work on superposed buckle folding, the rotation of inclusions within shear zones, and a folding pattern known as chocolate-tablet boudinage. He published more than fifty peer-reviewed papers and the book Structural Geology: Fundamentals and Modern Developments, supervised thirteen doctoral students, and was elected a fellow of both the Indian National Science Academy and the Indian Academy of Sciences. He received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology in 1977 and the K. Naha Memorial Medal in 1998.
