Thomas Wren Ebbesen is a Franco-Norwegian chemist born January 30, 1954, a professor at the University of Strasbourg in France. He is known for his pioneering work in nanoscience, particularly his discovery of extraordinary optical transmission, the ability to transmit light efficiently through subwavelength holes in opaque metal films, a finding that challenged established optical theory. He shared the 2014 Kavli Prize in Nanoscience with Stefan Hell and John Pendry for transformative contributions to the field of nano-optics, and he also received the 2019 CNRS Gold Medal.
