William Brownrigg (1712-1800) was an English physician and scientist who practiced in Whitehaven, Cumberland. He was awarded the Copley Medal in 1766 for his research on carbonic acid gas, and he was the first person to describe platinum as a distinct new element. As a Fellow of the Royal Society, he also contributed to medicine and to industrial processes including salt manufacture.
