William Chandler Roberts-Austen (1843 to 1902) was an English metallurgist who served as Chemist and Assayer of the Royal Mint and professor of metallurgy at the Royal School of Mines. Using thermal analysis, he plotted the freezing and transformation temperatures of iron-carbon alloys across their range of composition, producing the constitution diagrams that became the iron-carbon phase diagram at the foundation of steel metallurgy. The high-temperature phase of iron and steel, austenite, is named for him.
