William Sealy Gosset

William Sealy Gosset was an English statistician and chemist who, while working as a brewer for the Guinness brewery in Dublin, developed what is now called Student's t-distribution, a foundational tool of modern statistics for drawing reliable conclusions from small sample sizes. Gosset's practical work at Guinness, testing small batches of barley and hops for quality control, regularly confronted him with the problem that the standard statistical methods of the time assumed large sample sizes and gave misleading or overconfident results when applied to the small experimental samples that were all a working brewery could realistically obtain. Working through the underlying mathematics himself, Gosset derived a new probability distribution, now called the t-distribution, that properly accounts for the extra uncertainty involved in estimating a population's true variability from only a small sample, along with the accompanying t-test still used throughout science today to judge whether a difference measured between two small groups of data is likely to be real rather than due to chance. Because Guinness restricted its research staff from publishing findings under their own names, for fear of revealing trade information to competitors, Gosset published his statistical work in 1908 under the pseudonym Student, the name by which the distribution and test are still popularly known even though few users today know Gosset's own name; his innovations in small-sample statistics and experimental design proved foundational to the whole later development of modern statistical practice.
