Jean-Loup Puget is a French astrophysicist born March 7, 1947, whose research focuses on the cosmic microwave background. With collaborators he made the first identification of the cosmic infrared background using data from the Cosmic Background Explorer, and with Alain Leger he developed the hypothesis that certain infrared emission lines in astrophysical objects originate from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. He serves as principal investigator of the High Frequency Instrument module for the European Space Agency Planck space mission, and he received the 2018 Shaw Prize in Astronomy.
